CITMA Develops Energy Matrix Transition Projects in Holguin

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) in Holguin province is promoting a shift in the energy matrix. Through the implementation of scientific projects dedicated to this goal. A priority in response to the electricity crisis affecting the country.

Geovanny Zaldívar Martínez, Deputy Delegate of the Environment Ministry in the province, told CNA that the plans include irrigation systems with pumps powered by solar panels. With the installation of water heaters in social institutions and hospitals.

He noted that these actions have an impact on food production in remote and difficult-to-access areas of the Turquino Plan. Which benefit from international programs to strengthen local capacities, including Ecovalor.

The specialist emphasized that the plans include training in the operation of photovoltaic systems. Also the importation of spare parts for their optimal functioning. Even amidst the shortages caused by the United States’ policy against Cuba.

He also mentioned the use of other sources such as wind and biogas on farms with potential. Focusing on the use of animal manure for energy production and fertilizer for planting forage crops.

The initiatives also include the advancement of women through benefits for female farm owners or residents in vulnerable areas. One of the priorities of gender policies in Cuba, the specialist noted.

Moreover the shift in the Caribbean nation’s energy matrix seeks the gradual replacement of electricity generation. Which currently relies 95 percent on fossil fuels. Through the installation of solar panels in economic and service sectors.

Holguin has more than 200 scientific programs focused on national priorities. Such as science-based governance, food sovereignty, and support for scientific capital.
