Press Professionals Recognized in Holguin

The Abraham Portuondo Larrasagui Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to journalist Calixto González Betancourt, of the weekly newspaper ¡Ahora! As part of the activities in Holguin for Cuban Press Day, celebrated annually on March 14th.

A jury chaired by Magalys Pupo and composed of Rubén Rodríguez, Alfredo Carralero. Aroldo García recognized the work of this professional on Thursday as a teacher, reporter, and lead sports editor for the Holguin newspaper. Also who has dedicated more than four decades to journalism.

During the celebration, the Félix Elmusa Distinction was awarded to Luis Ernesto Urbino. A sound engineer for Radio Angulo, for his more than 40 years of uninterrupted work in the sector.

Germán Veloz Placencia, president of the Union of Journalists of Cuba in Holguin. Recognized the work of the award winners and emphasized that, in times of cognitive warfare. The Holguin press defends the truth as an essential legacy in our times.

The event coincided with the presentation of awards for the 63rd anniversary of ¡Ahora! A publication that annually evaluates the quality of information in the media and which this year recognized Lourdes Pichs and Jorge Fernández. In categories such as Feature Reporting and Hypermedia Journalism for their works “Banking on the Waiting List” and “The Utopia of the SAF,” among others.

Awards for Work of the Year were also given to Iván Romero, in television. Aroldo García, in radio. Lourdes Pichs, in print media. Jorge Fernández, in digital journalism. And Álvaro Sánchez, in photojournalism.

The event, held in the Revolution Room of the La Periquera Provincial History Museum. It was attended by Joel Queipo Ruiz, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and First Secretary in the province. With Manuel Francisco Hernández Aguilera, Governor of Holguin.

The celebration of Cuban Press Day, which commemorates the 134th anniversary of the founding of the newspaper Patria by José Martí in New York. It pays special tribute this year in Holguin to the centennial of the birth of the historical leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz.
