Daylight Saving Time Begins This Sunday, March 8th

Cuba’s National Office for the Control of the Rational Use of Energy (ONURE). Announced that clocks should be moved forward one hour this Sunday, March 8th, for the start of Daylight Saving Time.

The change responds to the need to promote awareness of energy efficiency. The institution of the Ministry of Energy and Mines pointed out. Also the decision to change the time is also due to the greater use of sunlight in daily activities.

The implementation of Daylight Saving Time is a measure with a significant impact on energy savings. As it allows for a more rational use of sunlight.

Moreover the change means that Cuba, instead of using the official time of the 75th meridian west of Greenwich (UTC -5). It will use the time of the 60th meridian west (UTC -4). So the center of the time zone that virtually crosses over the easternmost part of Canada, the Lesser Antilles, Venezuela, western Brazil, and Bolivia.

Experts explained that the option to change the clocks is associated with natural causes. Such as the Earth’s shape, the tilt of its axis of rotation, the length of Earth’s orbit, and its speed of revolution.

The first such event in the country was establish by Presidential Decree 1185, dated June 2nd, 1939.
