Cuba defeats Nicaragua 6-0 in closing friendly series

The Cuban national baseball team defeated Nicaragua 6-0 in the fourth and final game. Of the friendly series leading up to today’s VI World Baseball Classic.

At the Soberanía National Stadium in Managua, the team managed by Germán Mesa scored the first run in the second inning. When Yoelkis Guibert drew a walk, stole second. Advanced to third on a catcher’s error, and scored on a double by Yulieski Remón.

The lead was extended in the seventh inning when a bases-loaded sacrifice fly. Designated hitter Alfredo Despaigne to center field. Following a fielding error, cleared the bases and added three more runs for the Caribbean team.

In the ninth inning, a two-run homer to right field by Ariel Martínez. His second of the tournament, added two more runs to seal the Cuban victory.

Martínez, speaking to Prensa Latina, expressed his satisfaction with the final result of the game. Also which he described as a high-level competition and necessary to be better prepared for the World Baseball Classic.

“Our team has quality, but sometimes I think we need to improve our concentration at certain moments. We still have some weaknesses to correct. However, I believe we can achieve a good result in the World Baseball Classic,” he stated.

During the game, played before a packed stadium, the Cuban team collected 12 hits and committed one error. While the Nicaraguan team totaled eight hits and made two errors.

The hosts finished the game with 15 strikeouts and in the final two innings stranded 13 runners. Seven of them in scoring position. The series concluded with a tie in the first game, two victories for Cuba (the second and fourth games), and one win for Nicaragua.

Nevertheless, the four games constituted a true sporting celebration. In which fans enjoyed watching the top baseball players. From both nations in an atmosphere of preparation and high competition leading up to the World Baseball Classic.

Following the series, the Cuban team will travel to Phoenix to play exhibition games against the Kansas City Royals. And the Cincinnati Reds, as part of their final preparations for the global tournament.
