UN General-Secretary António Guterres today regretted the United States’ decision to withdraw from 31 entities of the multilateral organization. But assured that the UN will continue to carry out all its work.
In a memorandum, President Donald Trump instructed departments and agencies of the Executive Branch. To take immediate steps to withdraw from dozens of international bodies, conventions, and treaties.
Among the UN agencies and entities that the United States will leave are the Population Fund. Which supports maternal and child health and combats sexual and gender-based violence. The Framework Convention on Climate Change; and the Democracy Fund.
Also included are four of the five regional commissions (Asia and the Pacific, West Asia, Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean). Considered key platforms for cooperation.
Despite the impact of this decision, Guterres affirmed that “all entities will continue to implement their mandates. As granted to them by the Member States.” The UN has a responsibility to those who depend on us. We will continue to carry out our work with determination, he affirmed.
“As we consistently emphasize, assessed contributions to the regular budget and peacekeeping. Also as approved by the General Assembly, are a legal obligation under the UN Charter for all members, including the United States,” Guterres’ spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, stated in a press release.
