Through interventions in population settlements, the health sector strengthened community action in the province of Holguin during 2025.
The strategy included municipalities such as Cacocum and Urbano Noris. Among those most affected by Hurricane Melissa, which struck eastern Cuba in the early morning of October 29th and caused severe flooding.
Julio Yamel Verdecia Reyes, general director of the sector, explained to the Cuban News Agency that this approach has a significant impact. Because it brings specialties such as pediatrics, angiology, neurology, orthopedics, and ophthalmology. Among others, to vulnerable and hard-to-reach areas.
Moreover the director emphasized that patients normally have to travel to the municipal or provincial capitals. So this strategy offers them rapid care in family doctor and nurse offices, rehabilitation centers, or community polyclinics.
He noted that the interventions also include active case finding for arboviruses, control of chronic non-communicable diseases, and early identification of various conditions. With the participation of students from different branches of medical sciences.
Dariannis Parada Núñez, a patient residing in Cacocum, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to receive an orthopedic evaluation in her own community after an accident. Also with the added convenience of saving on transportation costs.
In 2025, Holguin also achieved results in research, adolescent pregnancy control, assisted reproduction, maternal and child health care, and the professional development of staff, teachers, and specialists.
