The Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDRs), the country’s largest mass organization. Celebrated their 65th anniversary in 2025, reaffirming their role as an irreplaceable bulwark of the Cuban people’s unity and resistance.
Amid complex economic and political challenges, the anniversary was celebrated on September 28th. Marking the culmination of 12 months of social mobilization, ideological defense, and intensive community work.
To promote neighborhood unity, the celebrations began the previous year with the September 28th Flag Parade. Which traveled throughout the country until reaching Havana. The city where Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz founded the organization to defend national sovereignty.
Throughout 2025, the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDRs) proved to be a key element in the various initiatives during these challenging times. They were at the forefront of the fight for food security within communities. Promoting the creation of urban gardens and supporting the direct sale of agricultural products in neighborhoods.
Similarly, founders and members of the CDRs who contribute to the tradition and deep roots of the organization in Cuban society were recognized. This recognition, in turn, highlighted the CDRs’ historical relevance. With the presentation of the “Neighborhood Award” to individuals and institutions whose actions strengthen community values.
During this period, they also undertook initiatives for energy conservation. Promoting awareness and monitoring of electricity consumption, and actively participated in the “Bastion 2025” Popular Exercise, organizing territorial defense drills.
Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, National Coordinator of the CDR. He emphasized in multiple speeches the need to strengthen revolutionary vigilance against campaigns of political subversion and illegal activities. Reaffirmed the role of the CDRs as the first line of defense of the Revolution.
Voluntary blood donations, hygiene campaigns to combat dengue fever, and the promotion of cultural activities reflected the work of the CDRs throughout the year. In addition, raw materials festivals and neighborhood debates were organized. As well as other activities dedicated to reinforcing patriotic values and national identity.
Furthermore, the “Looking at the Sea” detachments, fundamental pillars in the country’s coastal protection, celebrated their 55th anniversary. Together with the Border Guard Troops, they protect the coastlines from boat thefts, the destruction of flora and fauna, drug landings, and illegal departures.
With one month remaining in the 65th year of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDRs), the eastern provinces were impacted by Hurricane Melissa. The CDRs mobilized their members throughout the country and successfully collected thousands of donations for the victims.
The latest report tallied nearly 225,000 items of clothing for men, women, and children. Also as well as footwear, personal hygiene products, and non-perishable food, all of which were distributed immediately.
Moreover the organization also received international donations such as medicine, mattresses, and appliances. Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) also contributed. So various resources through the CDRs to support the recovery efforts in the affected areas.
At the close of 2025, the National Directorate of the CDRs outlined its work plan for the coming year. Focusing on enhancing the political and ideological training of its members and deepening social work in support of the most vulnerable sectors. Always in coordination with the directives of the Party and the Government.
In conclusion the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDRs), with more than six decades of existence, will conclude 2025 not as a relic of the past. But as a living and dynamic mechanism, prepared to continue being. In the words of their leaders, the shield of the Revolution on every block.
