In the large studio of Radio Angulo, where dramas were once recorded, silence is not emptiness, but raw material. There, professionals with a keen ear and boundless creativity become composers of realities. They don’t use pencils or brushes, but a console full of “many little buttons” to make precise cuts, select music, and add effects.
Today, December 4th, as Cuba celebrates Sound Engineer’s Day, it’s fitting to pause our routines and listen—truly listen—to the work of these artists who, especially in Holguin radio, paint sounds so that we can see with our ears.
Meanwhile the province’s talent is no secret. Recently, the Holguin Provincial Radio Festival awarded prizes for excellence in technical categories. Such as music composition and recording, recognizing professionals like Edgar Rodríguez, from Radio Juvenil.
Also this prestige is forged by individuals: the wisdom of voices and soundboards like those of Luis Ernesto Urbino, Hugo Mora Parra, Eduardo Vega, Raymundo Peña, Amalio Carralero, and Erick de la Cruz, pillars with decades of experience at Radio Angulo. Also the fresh talent of creators like Dianelis Remedios Gorra. Together, they and so many others form the constellation of talent that makes Holguin’s radio broadcasting a sonic beacon for Cuba.
Moreover this recognition is a testament to the rigor of a profession that, in Holguin, has deep roots: the first regular radio broadcast in the province dates back to September 10th, 1930, from what was then the Telégrafo Hotel.
Nearly a century of sonic history that these professionals carry on their shoulders. Modernizing communication techniques to continue being the best companion for their audience.
Futhermore their work is, above all, an act of collective support and resilience. They are the “indispensable support” for announcers and journalists. Capable of transforming an unforeseen event or into a beautiful piece of work that goes on air. In a context where technological innovation is a constant challenge, their ingenuity multiplies.
While many radio stations around the world and in Cuba discuss the impact of artificial intelligence on sound creation, in Holguin, inventiveness is also applied to the tangible. Groups of technicians and enthusiasts specialize in repairing any damaged audio equipment. A vital service for keeping the signal alive.
Also the future of sound in Cuba is being built from the ground up. Proof of this is that recording projects from Holguin were mentioned among the case studies at the recent EGREM International Meeting of Sound Professionals. This detail confirms that quality transcends borders.
Finally from the municipal radio station Radio Holguin La Nueva, broadcasting on 96.1 FM with its “#SoundToSee” philosophy, to the founding studios of Radio Angulo, these sound engineers ensure that every word, every note, and every effect is not just sound. But a clear and moving image that reaches every home.
In conclusion today, we give them our thanks. To the architects of Holguin’s silence: their statue has already been erected in the airwaves and in the hearts of their listeners.
