A Happy and Fulfilled Woman in the Laboratory

The laboratory at the Gustavo Aldereguía Lima University Teaching Hospital in the coastal city of Gibara, Holguin, is Melvys Sablón García’s second home. There, she develops her skills as a microbiologist and finds happiness and fulfillment.

Although studying this field required enormous sacrifice. She enjoys the affection of her patients and colleagues at the hospital. Whose new location offers greater comfort for practicing her specialty.

From her years as a student at the Frank País García University of Medical Sciences, located in Gibara itself. Also she remembers the preparation provided by her professors and her immediate fascination with clinical microbiology.

Her merits as a student at that institution led her to pursue this branch of medicine directly at the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology, and Microbiology. One of the programs designed to enhance the training of young doctors in the region.

Melvis described her year at the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine in Havana as one of the greatest rewards for her sacrifice and dedication. Moreover where she was able to apply the knowledge she had acquired.

There, she met remarkable scientists, including Dr. María Guadalupe Guzmán, and described those 12 months as an invaluable source of knowledge about diseases. Including those eradicated in Cuba and constantly studied by specialists.

During her time between Gibara, Holguin, and Havana, she grew into a remarkable woman and a fully graduated professional after the first cases of COVID-19 were detected in those eastern regions.

During that period, she confesses that it wasn’t easy being away from her home and family. She faced very difficult moments during the height of the pandemic. But at the same time, she found a family among her professors and colleagues. During those days, she told the Cuban News Agency, lifelong friendships were forged. Although it was a difficult period, but also one full of experience, learning, and personal and collective growth, amidst the callenges posed by the illness.

A true challenge was balancing work with the joy of being a mother to a 12-year-old girl. Since microbiologists are usually demanding and meticulous about cleanliness and order. However, when there is love, both can be achieved without difficulty.

Within the four walls of the laboratory, this young doctor found fulfillment as a specialist. Although spending one’s life with one’s eyes behind a microscope might seem routine. For her it represents the ultimate expression of happiness.

Today, the Gustavo Aldereguía Lima Hospital reopens its doors to Melvys. The laboratory brings her professional success, and she is happy for the opportunity to put the career she loves so much at the service of humanity.
