With the distribution of 60 single mattresses and eight crib mattresses, recovery efforts are progressing following the assessment of partial and total damage in Yaguabo. One of the communities most affected by the flooding caused by Hurricane Melissa in the Holguin municipality of Cacocum.
Anyela Martínez Quesada, head of the processing desk for the Limpio Chiquito People’s Council, informed the Cuban News Agency that, despite losses of all resources, mattresses are among the most pressing needs. With a total of 370 mattresses required.
She specified that, preliminarily, 222 homes were affected. Including one total collapse, nine partially damaged roofs, and 77 with minor damage. The official noted that there is an area in the territory that has not yet been accessible due to persistent flooding, with approximately 13 houses near the community’s lagoon. Whose residents remain evacuated to the municipal capital.
As a result of the heavy rains, the water became contaminated. A situation that was mitigated by the delivery of water by tanker truck and the distribution of chlorine and sodium hypochlorite to sterilize the tanks, Martínez Quesada added.
The assistance committee is comprised of representatives from the Ministries of Economy and Planning, Housing, Labor, and Commerce. As well as the bank, the president of the defense zone, delegates, and the community group. Also with the aim of reaching the entire affected population and coordinating aid through working groups.
Yaguabo is a settlement located on the banks of the Central Highway, near the border with Granma province, about 12 kilometers from Cacocum. It is one of the areas most affected by the flooding associated with the heavy rains of Hurricane Melissa. Which covered 100 percent of the area and left a total of 427 residents affected.
