The Holguin Food Production and Distribution Company (NUMA) is progressively reactivating its production lines. After recovering several processing centers impacted by Hurricane Melissa in the eastern region of the country.
Kirenia Balada Peña, director of NUMA, explained to the Cuban News Agency (CNA) that the storm damaged the infrastructure of 80 processing facilities to varying degrees. More than 12 of these have been restored, with priority given to those producing essential goods for the population.
Among the services guaranteed were the production of bread for the basic food basket and the distribution of food to evacuation sites and priority neighborhoods. Fuel was ensured for units with generators.
Each center was responsible for supporting evacuees. Providing them with meals including soups, fried foods, croquettes, and other items. The cookie factories are also operational. Enabling distribution to severely affected areas, such as Floro Pérez in Gibara. From where they supply hard-to-reach communities after the local bakery was damaged during the hurricane.
Balada Peña also highlighted the solidarity shown by units in less damaged areas toward other affected communities. As is the case in Sagua de Tanamo, where they have access to products made in Moa.
The director noted that recovery efforts are evident in the continued operation of facilities like the Aguas Claras unit and the entity’s headquarters in the provincial capital. Moreover in which suffered damage to the lightweight roof of its third floor.
With the social mission of producing flour and agricultural products, NUMA in Holguin has the support of three state-owned micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), farms, self-consumption plots, and an organic garden. Through which it channels raw materials to the industry to reduce costs and utilize local resources.
