The Cuban national team returned to winning ways and defeated Uzbekistan 3-1 this Thursday in the fourth round of the Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities. Which is taking place in Astana, Kazakhstan, until Saturday.
Victories by Pedro Morales, Carlos Larduet, and Idalis Batista secured Cuba’s success in this match. The only defeat was suffered by National Master Héctor Luis Fuentes from Holguin, who lost at table three to Marsel Shayusupov.
Héctor Luis thus lost his unbeaten record, having defeated Erlan Nurhayev (Kazakhstan-2) and Inani Darpan (India) in the first three games. Also drew against Polish International Master Pawel Piekielny.
This Thursday, Poland maintained its near-perfect record by beating Israel 2.5-1.5. While the main team of the International Chess Federation (FIDE-1) defeated the Czech Republic 3-1.
With these results, Poland and FIDE-1 are the only teams to have won all four of their matches in the Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities, accumulating eight points. However, based on the tiebreaker system, the Poles occupy first place. They are followed by a group of teams from third to eighth place, including Cuba, all with six points.
