A lightning strike near the town of Cupey, in the municipality of Moa, Holguin province, left three dead and four injured.
According to a report by the lead specialist of the Emergency Room at Guillermo Luis Hernández Hospital, Dr. Osmany Rodríguez. He said the patients were immediately treated and underwent all necessary tests. They are also reported to be in serious condition.
Irelemis Ortiz del Rosario, one of the injured, stated that “around 5:00 p.m., she was heading home in Yamaniguey when it started to rain. So a group of people took shelter under an awning to protect themselves from the rain.”
“Approximately an hour later, lightning struck, I felt a stinging sensation, and I was thrown two meters away from where I was standing. “Then I crawled to the road to ask for help,” she added.
Recounting the incident, she commented on the traumatic experience and how difficult it was to see people not reacting when the victims called for help.
The territory’s top political and government officials were present at both the scene of the incident and the hospital.
Moreover according to local press reports on Facebook, the names of the deceased are Leonel Velázquez Legrá, 34. Lázaro Rodríguez Peña, 36, and Eniolquis Romero Terrero, 33. Also the injured are Yuxander Robles Robles, Irelemis Ortiz del Rosario, Lisbeth Pajan Silot, and Dantry Revé Quiala.
An annual average of 51 deaths were caused by electrical shocks in Cuba from 1987 to 2023. In addition to material losses, according to a publication by the Institute of Meteorology.
