The El Cocal photovoltaic solar park, in the Holguin municipality of Urbano Noris, is now 90 percent complete and is preparing for commissioning. The goal is to inject clean energy into the National Electricity System (SEN in the Spanish acronym) and contribute to the diversification of the country’s energy mix.
The project, which began on March 14th of this year, has shown accelerated progress in recent weeks. This momentum is largely due to the arrival of a significant contingent of resources. Which has allowed for simultaneous work on multiple fronts. This strategy has been key to overcoming adversities, such as the rains that affected the area in recent days.

Onelis Tamayo, director of the Urbano Noris Electricity OEB, stated that “right now, the main objective is to achieve synchronization as soon as posible. An objective that will be realized in the coming days.”
The launch of the El Cocal solar park will represent a concrete contribution of renewable energy to the national energy system. Also helping to reduce the burning of fossil fuels and carbon dioxide emissions. It also provides installed capacity and technical expertise in the region for future projects of this type.
Moreover with the project in its final stages, Urbano Noris is preparing to welcome a new source of development that harnesses the sun’s energy.

Three of the five planned solar parks are already operating in Holguin. Each with a generating capacity of 21.8 megawatts (MW). A total contribution of 109 MW by the end of 2025.
Thanks to a donation from the People’s Republic of China, another project is being developed that will generate 120 MW in the country. The eastern province will initially have 40 MW. Distributed across six sites of five MW and one of 10 MW.
The province of Holguin plays a leading role in the national energy strategy. Futhermore with 12 solar parks under development that are expected to contribute 149 MW to the SEN by the end of this year.
