Prominent Holguín Historians Recognized on Their Day in Holguín

At the La Periquera Provincial History Museum in the Cuban city of parks, home to the House of Holguín Historians, prominent figures from the territory were recognized on their day.

Historians Mayra San Miguel Aguilar and Nuris Valcárcel, respectively, received the Axe and the Coat of Arms of Holguín from the highest governmental and political authorities of the territory. These awards commemorate the invaluable work and contributions of both to Holguín and Cuban culture and history.

A new exhibition hall, titled “From Root to Fruit,” was also inaugurated in the space, divided into two rooms. One houses an important collection of 20th-century Cuban avant-garde art; the second features representations of several Holguín artists.

Since 1986, the Axe of Holguín has become the official symbol of the territory, as it is one of the archaeological pieces discovered in the Caribbean region that most represents pre-Hispanic groups. Since then, it has been awarded in recognition of individuals, institutions, territories, and groups that deserve such an important symbol.

The emotional event was presided over by Joel Queipo Ruiz, first secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba in Holguín; Manuel Hernández Aguilera, provincial governor; Grisel Santana Sarduy, director of museums at the National Heritage Council; Yaquelín Tapia Aguilera, provincial director of culture; and other authorities.
