Border Guard detachment receives Neighborhood Award

In recognition of the work of the men and women who protect our coasts, the Eastern North Border Guard Troop Detachment in the province of Holguín received the Barrio Award as part of the activities commemorating the 65th anniversary of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution.

This unit, the only one of its kind in the country to receive such an honor, was recognized for its joint work with the CDRs (Committees for the Defense of the Revolution) in preventing drug smuggling through the “Mirando al Mar” (Looking at the Sea) detachments.

Among its main contributions is providing intelligence for the detection of suspicious naval assets linked to international drug trafficking operations. Likewise, its work has been crucial in identifying harmful ideological expressions, counterrevolutionary propaganda, attempts to smuggle narcotics into the country, and illegal exits from the country.

During the ceremony, Yailín Álvarez Velázquez, provincial coordinator of the CDRs, highlighted the indispensable role of this detachment in protecting the borders and combating illicit activities.

For his part, Colonel Sergio René Ortiz Sablón, head of the Eastern North Border Guard Troop Detachment, expressed that the recognition is deeply motivating and reinforces the commitment to continue safeguarding national sovereignty with greater dedication.

He affirmed that the current moment demands a firm commitment to counter threats from the North, including piracy, terrorism, and the scourge of drugs. This responsibility, he emphasized, requires increased effort and sacrifice, with the primary objective of safeguarding the security of Cuba’s maritime and coastal areas.

The event also included blood donations, an initiative that sought to encourage this highly valuable act of solidarity for our country’s healthcare system.

The event was attended by Joel Queipo Ruiz, member of the Central Committee and First Secretary of the PCC in the province; Arelis Marrero Guerrero, member of the Central Committee and the Provincial Bureau of the PCC; and First Colonel Víctor Rafael Miralles Legón, head of the Ministry of National Defense (MININT) in the territory.
