Cardiology Knowledge Updated in Holguin

On Cuban Cardiology Day, this September 11th, in celebration of the 88th anniversary of the founding of the Cuban Society of Cardiology (SCC), the Vladimir Ilich Lenin General University Hospital hosted the 2nd Provincial Cardiology Conference.

This scientific event brought together cardiologists, residents, cardiovascular surgeons, nursing staff, and technicians associated with this field. As well as professionals from other specialties closely linked to the field. To update their knowledge on topics of interest to the profession through keynote lectures.

Among the most frequently discussed topics were recent advances in cardiovascular interventional therapy, an update on ischemic cerebrovascular disease. The practical implications of the 2025 guidelines for the management of acute coronary syndrome, the prevention of premature aging, and the HEARTS initiative for the Americas.

According to Dr. José Leandro Pérez Guerrero, Head of the Provincial Cardiology Service, “We will carry out a series of activities beginning on this day, with lectures sponsored primarily by the Holguin Chapters of the Cuban Society of Cardiology, Internal Medicine, and Family Medicine. Also, with the support of specialists in Internal Medicine, General Medicine, and our specialty, keynote lectures will be given on various topics in Cardiology and other related specialties.”

Co-sponsored by the Provincial Coordinating Group for Non-Communicable Diseases, the Provincial Council of Scientific Societies, and the University of Medical Sciences of Holguin (UCMHo). The activities accompanying the scientific day focused on the motto “From the specialist to the student, from the hospital to the community. For a healthy heart, a single will.”

Regarding other activities to be carried out until World Heart Day. The first-year cardiology specialist noted that they will offer courses on echocardiography and ischemic heart disease to explore their relationship with the Maternal-Child Program, and will develop community-impact activities to bring preventive medicine to different health areas.

“For World Heart Day, we have planned an activity dedicated to knowledge skills for undergraduate students. This demonstrates the importance of this refresher and awareness-raising event to preserve cardiovascular health for all Holguin residents and Cubans,” he concluded.

During the scientific session, doctors Reyber Jesús Domínguez Pérez, who is also President of the Holguin Chapter of the Cuban Society of Cardiology. Wilber Jesús Riverón Carralero; Rolando Carlos Batista Lora; and Juan Carlos Báster Moro shared topics of interest with the audience. Given the need to update the management of patients with heart conditions.

At the end of the event, the “Perseverance in Cardiology Award” was presented to 33 professionals with over 15 years of experience in the specialty, with outstanding work within this provincial chapter.
