Holguin-Havana train operating normally

At around 2:05 a.m. local time on Saturday, the locomotive of train No. 16, coming from Holguin to Havana, suffered a partial derailment as it entered the yards of Havana Central Station.

The incident mobilized railway authorities to ensure the safety of the 984 passengers. 164 of whom boarded during intermediate sections of the route. No injuries were reported.

According to information from the Ministry of Transportation, the derailment of locomotive No. 52557 occurred in an area with no platform. Near the station’s overpass, damaging four wheels.

Authorities from the Western Railway Company and executives and specialists from the National Passenger Trains company present during the recovery efforts emphasize that the crew and driver acted in accordance with established safety protocols.

The source adds that the passengers disembarked without incident. Although they initially remained on the train as a precaution. Support teams were immediately activated to assist the passengers and crew.

With the assistance of auxiliary locomotives, the derailed unit was put back on track and transported for inspection. A process that took a little over an hour. The station is currently operating normally.

An investigative commission, made up of members of the Railway Transport Administration (ATF) and provincial authorities, is analyzing the technical causes of the failure.
