A tie and a loss were the outcome of the Holguin Cubs‘ match against the Granma Alazanes at the Mártires de Barbados Stadium in Bayamo. In preparation for the 64th National Baseball Series, which begins on September 2nd.
The first game ended successfully for the 12×4 home team. With the winners hitting 12 hits, double the number of the losers, who failed three times on defense. The individual victory went to Joel Mojena, and the loss went to Carlos Alberto Santiesteban.
Half of Holguin’s hits were home runs, hit by Yasiel González (2-for-3). Raúl Pupo (1-for-3, 2 RBI), and Cristian Onofre (1-for-2).
Donny Ramírez hit the ball for Granma, while star Alfredo Despaigne went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a pair of strikeouts.
The second game, also seven innings, ended tied at five runs with eight hits for the Cubs, five for the Alazanes, and one miscue for each team.
For the Holguin team, Marcos Fonseca (1-for-3) and Yasiel González (1-for-4) hit the ball over 400 feet, while Raúl Pupo went 2-for-4.
The Holguin pitchers were Norge Luis Cobas (3.0 innings), José Miguel Rodríguez (2.0), and Andriuw Valido (2.0).
According to sabermetrician Yasser Vázquez, the Cubs have accumulated four wins, two losses, and four draws in their preseason matches against Sancti Spiritus, Villa Clara, Las Tunas, the U-18 national youth pre-selection, and Granma.
If the proposed schedule for the 64th National Series is approved, the Cubs would begin playing at home in the first two sub-series: five games against Granma and another five against Guantanamo.
