Cuban Minister of Energy and Mines Vicente de la O Levy affirmed this Monday that the country’s strategy for electricity recovery is proving effective and putting the country on the path to independence from fossil fuels.
De la O Levy emphasized that the program is long-term and that all efforts are being invested in it, speaking at the Services Commission, which is meeting as a prelude to the fifth ordinary session of the National Assembly of People’s Power.
The minister explained that part of the high demand recorded recently is related to the purchase of household appliances, the decline in domestic oil production, the lack of liquefied gas, and electricity rates.
To reverse this situation, he said, the priority is to regain energy sovereignty in the shortest possible time to meet the needs of the population and the economy, rehabilitate the grids, find solutions for emergency generators, and advance the energy transition, which he considered a cultural change for Cuba.
The minister highlighted one of the main results of the semester: the halt in the decline in domestic oil production, for which financial solutions were found, and the production is 51,000 tons above plan.
He explained that the commitment to deliver natural gas to the Energas plant is being met, the recently commissioned photovoltaic parks are generating 481.3 megawatts (MW), and 383 MW has been recovered from fuel, oil, and diesel engines.
However, he explained, it is not yet possible to guarantee the volumes for generating 700-1,000 MW, and there is an increase in peak demand during the midday and evening peaks due to the shortage of liquefied gas.
“These factors prevent us from reducing the impacts to levels that allow the rotation of switchable circuits for an average of four hours per day,” he noted. He also affirmed that the country is continuing to search for different and innovative fuel alternatives and expressed confidence that the strategy to recover the country’s electrical system will yield positive results.
