Leuris Pupo Requejo, the greatest shooter in the history of Cuban sports, has decided to hang up his pistol. Bringing to a close a career that marked an era and made him a source of pride for Cuba and Holguin.
According to Ahora, the Holguin native Leuris was a symbol of perseverance, longevity in the sport, precision, and nerves of steel. Seven Olympic Games saw him wield his weapon with dignity and talent. A feat no other Cuban has achieved.
In London 2012, he shot to glory with the most brilliant gold medal of his career. In Tokyo 2020, almost a decade later, he returned to the podium to win silver, demonstrating his tenacity and perseverance.
It also notes that Leuris not only competed brilliantly in the Olympics. But also in other multi-sport games. He left his mark at the Pan American Games: Santo Domingo 2003, Rio 2007, and Santiago de Chile 2023 witnessed his gold medals.
As if that weren’t enough, Ahora adds, he also commanded respect at the World Cups: gold medals in Argentina (1998), silver in Fort Benning (2015), and bronze in Granada (2022).
Now, with the calm that only great duties accomplished can bring, Leuris Pupo says goodbye. There will be no more training or restrained arm wrestling on the shooting line. The echo of his shots will remain, the wake of his example, and the certainty that his legacy is eternal. The Cuban shooting range is losing its best shooter, but the Cubans and their Holguin homeland will remember his shots forever.
