The group exhibition “Miradas,” inaugurated at the Holguin Provincial Center for Fine Arts, promotes the work of the naive art movement in the eastern region. Presenting its works as a journey from the local to the universal in a variety of formats.
This exhibition, open to the public this weekend, brings together more than 30 works by eight artists from the province. Including Lorenzo Pantoja Hernández, Cristina Fonollosa Ibáñez, Julio Breff Guillarte, and Rolando Salvador Pavón. Under the general direction of Yuricel Moreno Zaldívar and curated by Bertha Beltrán Ordoñez.
In the current panorama, there is a group of creators who have chosen to express themselves in a very unique way, with a fresh and imaginative language. Finding their own path to be authentic without resorting to the formalities of contemporary art, Beltrán Ordoñez explained at the presentation of “Miradas.”
Moreno Zaldívar, director of the CPAP, highlighted the need to defend this movement in a context where, in Holguin. There is no longer such a rich expression as in the past, and argued that achieving this promotion is essential for established creators and new generations.
Similarly, painter Lorenzo Pantoja Hernández, during his opening remarks, called for the defense of naive creation among amateurs and young people who are not involved with the Academy but need a space that fosters and showcases their particular path to creation.
The exhibition explores costumbrist scenes, landscapes of everyday life, the picaresque of being, popular religiosity, and constant fabrication, delving into the creative universes of the artists who, from different geographies in eastern Cuba, have shared their vision of these phenomena.
With “Miradas,” the Holguin CPAP kicks off a broad program of summer activities. Under the slogan “Summer Forever Young,” the program will feature exhibitions in parks, workshops for children and amateurs, and the opening of new gallery spaces.
Naive art is a movement that emerged in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century, especially in France. It identifies an innate way of making art in those who perform a certain task, which has become primitive, naive, and popular. Throughout history, it has guided the style of great creators around the world.
