Small artists in the heart of Holguin

Art has the capacity to enhance the human being, but when it comes to artistic manifestations created by and for children, its value is multiplied. In the heart of Holguin, we find the group “Pequeños Artistas” (Small artists). A group of young talents that will celebrate its eighth anniversary with an inaugural gala this June 14th at the Eddy Suñol Theater.

The event, which will begin at 10:00 a.m., will feature the participation of distinguished guests, including the Teatro Guiñol de Holguin, the children’s lyric choir and singer-songwriter Lidis Lamorú, among other artists. The celebration will continue on June 21st at the Brisas Guardalavaca Hotel, coinciding with the beginning of summer, and also an occasion to officially commemorate its foundation, which dates back to June 25th.

When “Pequeños Artistas” emerge, talented giants are born.
This children’s group created in 2017 is a reflection of the dedication and impact of a community artistic project that was born in the Dalquis Sánchez Pupo Seminternship in the city of Holguin. What began as an artistic unit has grown thanks to the talent of the children and the need to provide cultural opportunities in the community.

The group is made up of a large group of children who, under the guidance of their teachers, put on all kinds of shows.

The initiative has expanded its scope to include students from other schools and offers a varied proposal that encompasses several specialties. Although dance stands out as its main artistic expression, innovative activities are also carried out, such as the creation of costumes with recycled materials.

At present, the group has an enrollment of around 50 children of both sexes, between 3 and 15 years of age, as well as a child with special needs.

Maylén Alfonso García, dance instructor and director of the project together with Yaquelín Córdova Rodríguez, visual arts instructor, emphasizes that “these eight years of work have not only fostered the artistic development of the children, but have also enriched the community by offering an essential creative and formative space”.

Together we are stronger

Their success lies not only in the quality of their presentations, but also in their effective collaboration with various institutions. This support network includes key organizations such as the José Martí Brigade of Art Instructors in the province.

In addition, it covers a broad spectrum of society where collaboration with the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC), the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR), provincial Health and Education and the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER) stand out, just to mention a few examples.

The combination of children’s artistic talent with institutional support is fundamental for the sustained growth of the collective. In addition, it is evidence of a strong community commitment that enriches the children’s experience and broadens their social impact.

The presentation of the artistic qualities of these young Holguineros is reflected in multiple scenarios from scientific events such as Expociencia. To cultural and political celebrations such as commemorative acts for the anniversary of the death of Jesús Menéndez or the most recent tribute to Fidel Castro in the province.

Likewise, their active participation in community activities in neighborhoods in transformation such as El Infierno, El Paraíso and Guajabales reflects a constant effort to get closer to the population and contribute to the cultural development of their environment.

Other events of great cultural importance in the province as the International Festival of Poor Cinema in Gibara, the May Pilgrimages, the Holguin Culture Week and the Book Fair. Highlight a significant artistic and cultural facet that makes them creditors of several recognitions as the one achieved in the National Theater Festival in Tierra Buena, where they were awarded the prize to the best infantile interpretation for the play “La Cucarachita Martina”.

With the “tip of their toes” they dance with Lidis Lamorú and Ronda de los Sueños.

The group “Pequeños Artistas” is also very close to the work and presentations of the singer-songwriter from Holguin, Lidis Lamorú.

“The collaboration with Lamorú is special and constant, accompanying her to present her children’s repertoire at the Eddy Suñol Theater and in various neighborhoods such as Paraíso, Guajabales and Emilio Bárcenas, which also helps us to demonstrate the versatility and ability to adapt to different scenarios that our children have,” explains dance instructor Maylén Alfonso García.

The union between the presentations of the singer-songwriter from Holguin and the group of children in different galas and activities. As well as the collaboration with the Ronda de los Sueños Company, are the pride of these children who, besides giving their art to others, are preparing for the future among laughter and games.

According to Alfonso García, “the group contributes to the artistic training of the children and their subsequent entry into the Elementary School of Art, which highlights our commitment to the integral development of future generations”.

The work of an artistic-community group such as “Pequeños Artistas” validates in these eight years the broad influence that art can have on children.

Projects of this type consolidate through their daily work their role as an agent of positive change in society, which is why they continue to work towards their official registration as a project that could further expand their impact on the community.

However, their main objective is and will continue to be working directly with the children and their inexhaustible source of artistic abilities. Which gives us the certainty that the artistic relay of the province is in capable and enthusiastic hands.
