Cuba’s national soccer team back home

Cuba’s senior national soccer team is at home to close the first Concacaf qualifying phase for the 2026 Fifa World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, in group A against Bermuda, next Tuesday.

On Saturday night, the team arrived in Santiago de Cuba and settled in to begin training on Sunday.

The team’s morale remains high after the away victory in Antigua and Barbuda, which placed them in a very comfortable position to advance to the final stage of the qualifying round.

Given that they have six points and their rivals have four, a draw would be enough for the Lions of the Caribbean to advance to the final round, something they have not achieved in more than 40 years. When they were seeking to qualify for Spain 1982.

The away win took the pressure off the Tricolor, who are confident they can finish the job at this city’s Antonio Maceo Stadium, where they have only lost one game, to Trinidad and Tobago in the Gold Cup preliminaries last March.

The Gombey Warriors are coming from a 5-0 win over the Cayman Islands. So they seem a more complex opponent for the Cubans than the previous one, and that above all will demand more from them in defense.

That does not make the home team lose favoritism, especially when the visitors have the obligation to win, so the clock will also be an ally of the Cubans.
