Juan Pablo Carreras, a photojournalist for the Cuban News Agency (ACN) in Holguin, won one of the three grand prizes in the first edition of the “Miradas que Alimentan“ Photography Contest, organized in Cuba by the United Nations World Food Program.
For its originality, technique, impact, artistic merit and thematic relevance, his work “La boyera del maíz“, won in the category Portraits of Nutrition, for the same quality the jury conferred laurels to the photographs “Little fisherman of dreams“, by Jorge López; and “Silverita Community Three“, by Yarelis González, corresponding to the categories Stories of Resilience and Life on Earth, respectively.
The contest, convened at the beginning of 2025, sought to promote the importance and challenges that exist around sustainable development and agricultural production, through the use of visual arts as a universal language.
According to Etienne Labande, WFP’s representative in Cuba, the launch of this event is a novel way in which, focused on the Cuban context, to promote the commitment of people to the advancement of a matter that is a priority worldwide.
The winning photographs will be exhibited at the Fototeca de Cuba along with the works selected by the jury as finalists by the authors Irving Alfaro, Alexander Díaz, David Estrada, Marinés Díaz Quintana, Fabiola Rico and Sandra Robaina.
The selection criteria was based on its artistic quality and thematic depth in the representation of experiences in the conservation of the environment, the recognition of people and communities that stand out in the fulfillment of the laudable objective and innovation and science focused on agricultural work.
“Feeding Looks“, sponsored by the Chair of Photography of the University of the Arts (ISA in the Spanish acrronym), the National Council of Plastic Arts (CNAP) and the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts, is part of the WFP‘s initiatives on the island to raise awareness and generalize the development of projects aimed at nutritional well–being.
