The province of Holguin recently held the National Meeting on Wars of Independence, an event that keeps the legacy of the nation’s libertarian heroes present, as well as their impact on the construction of national identity.
Based at the Birthplace of Calixto García, in the capital city, the event in its XXXV edition, brought together students, researchers, historians and academics from the province and other parts of the country, who presented papers with new searches on the historical period 1868-1898 from cultural, economic, health and hospital dimensions. Also aspects of little-studied historical figures.
Along with the debates and research exhibited, it was a propitious moment for the presentation of several books from the Editorial Conciencia Ediciones of the UHo-University of Holguin, linked to the Wars of Independence and the text, “Of Love, Panic and Hate”, written by the National History Prize José Abreu Cardet, the first Holguin to deserve such high recognition of this type in Cuba.
According to Paul Sarmiento Blanco, director of the Center for Studies on Culture and Identity CECI of the University of Holguin, and part of the jury of the event, the XXXV National Meeting on Wars of Independence had in this edition a participation of more than 30 papers but of them 17 were publicly exposed. There was also a commission for the presentation of research carried out by students.
According to the doctor of historical sciences, this is “the most important event in the country on the subject of the war of independence, a period in which our nationality was forged and the Cuban nation was legally created.”
The meeting closed with the awarding of the best presentations at the Municipal Museum of Gibara, a territory where a tour of several sites of historical interest was made such as the Loma del Hierro, declared a National Monument and located in the vicinity of the town of Floro Pérez.
