Holguin promotes the production of books with recycled paper

With a print run of more than five hundred copies per year and the presentation of handmade books that combine digital processes with manuals, the Cuadernos Papiro Publishing House promotes the production of texts with recycled paper from Holguin.

Manuel Arias Silveria, editor and director of Papiro, explained to ACN that the production of the paper is completely manufactured and in favor of the environment, since its composition is based on waste such as vegetable peels, newspapers and cardboard that are discarded from the offices, in addition to the use of natural fibers to provide colors and textures.

“The period of making a work with us can reach two months, since it covers from the beginning of each sheet and ends in the binding, this means that the production of the art book is a little slower and more careful than in the usual volumes,” explained Arias Silveria.

He also pointed out that manufactured paper is very well received by engravers, designers and professionals of the plastic arts, who take advantage of the possibilities offered by the textures of this resource, the main objective of the Publishing House, which first emerged as a workshop to meet the demands of the artists of the territory.

He also highlighted the agreement with Ediciones La Luz, publisher of the Hermanos Saíz Association in the province, to combine artisanal techniques with digital printing on manufactured paper, creating works by relevant authors such as Rubén Rodríguez, Delfin Prats and José Luis Moreno del Toro.

Within this alliance, the Artelibro project, by the producer of Ediciones La Luz and artisan Andrés Zaldívar, stands out, which recently presented at the Havana International Book Fair the publication of Flora and the Angel, the first title awarded with the Celestino Short Story Prize.

The Cuadernos Papiro Publishing House, Manufactured Paper Workshop and Printing Museum has the merit of being the cradle of a movement of artists in Holguin who, with the delivery of titles by transcendental authors, their handmade books have been recognized in international fairs in Mexico, Panama and Spain.
