Cuban Press Day Begins in Holguin

The delegation of the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC in the Spanish acronym) in Holguin began the Day of the Cuban Press which is celebrated every March 14 with an excursion to the Cave of Sao Corona, where in 1895 the newspaper El Cubano Libre.

In this historic place, located in the municipality of Cueto and declared a National Monument on March 27, 1980, professionals from various media outlets in this eastern province met with history.

After a difficult road, a place full of history awaited us, which allowed us to reflect on the role of journalism and its importance for Cubas independence,” wrote young journalist Jorge Fernández on the social network Facebook.

The walk was accompanied by Joel Queipo Ruiz, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in Holguin, who exchanged with journalists and historians.

In this historic scenario, Germán Veloz Placencia, President of UPEC in Holguin, recalled the role of the press in the consolidation of national identity and the commitment of journalists in confronting media intoxication campaigns aimed at breaking the resistance of Cuban revolutionaries.

The National Press Day, from March 5 to 19, will be guided by the idea Change, with the inspiring force of Martís journalism,” betting on a journalism more committed to the truth, close to the people and capable of facing the challenges of contemporaneity.

The Conference, which commemorates the 130th anniversary of the fall in combat of José Martí, is also dedicated to the 133rd anniversary of the founding of the newspaper Patria; on the 110th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding revolutionary and fighter of the pen Juan Manuel Márquez, appointed by Fidel as second in command of the Granma expedition; and the 40th anniversary of the Pablo de la Torriente Publishing House, a bastion of knowledge and dedication to the service of Cuban communication and culture.

It will also be an occasion to recognize the paradigms of our revolutionary journalism, those who with their talent and ethics have left a mark on the history of the Cuban press.
