She still arrives every morning at the Cuban News Agency, enters through the parking lot and begins her productive routine; Like a high-performance athlete, she detrains after more than a decade at the head of the media organization, which reaches every corner of the country.
Edda Diz Garcés has just received the news that she has been awarded the José Martí National Journalism Award for her life’s work, after several nominations, because the fight is hard when there are so many good journalists in Cuba who are dedicated to the priesthood of the word, to the best profession in the world, as Gabriel García Márquez called it, even in difficult times.
Elegant with skirts, multicolored blouses and loafers, “to be comfortable” this woman undertakes her working day, for more than 50 years dedicated entirely to Journalism, as a reporter or manager; but always, whether on the radio, the written press or the agency, with an adequate response to a difficult situation, a wise decision for the good of a group, a timely scolding or a class, although she says she does not opt for teaching.
With a PhD in Communication Sciences, Edda imprints scientificity on creative processes and knows about respect, ethics and professionalism, values that distinguish her and make her surround herself with good friends.
She arrived at the correspondent of the province of Holguin at a very young age, barely a student, to learn about the immediate news demanded by a news agency, very soon she led the bus and then in the radio of her native territory she occupied several roles until the steps led her to Havana.
The then Cuban Institute of Radio and Television and the newspaper Trabajadores were the prelude to the ACN, where she arrived more than a decade ago and still remains, although for a few days she has been officially retired, but never retired from this task that infects those who love the profession.
Edda, so busy and concerned about her family, so grandmother to her grandchildren and so mother to her children, has shared shifts between her loved ones and the ACN. Her elderly mother, whom she always has in mind, would be very happy today for this Prize.
Honor, honor, says a Martí precept, from whom the highest recognition given by the Union of Journalists of Cuba is named, and it will be received by the colleague, the friend, the boss, perhaps incredulous, because she thinks she does not deserve it, although it has contributed so much to the new forms of management of the revolutionary press.
Agencia Cubana Noticias is proud to have his experience and thanks her, also for the years of dedication and commitment, in times when others turn their backs.
You will see her arrive on this day and others, in a skirt and multicolored blouse, with loafers, transgressive, rebellious, as in those days, when from Holguin she went out to take on the world.
