The comprehensive and participatory approach to the diagnosis and treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma or liver cancer was the focus of the opening day of the Orientimagen 2025 event in the city of Holguin. Where professionals from all over the country participate.
Dr. Dayron Páez Suárez, hepatologist and specialist at the Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical Surgical Hospital, stressed during his conference that this type of cancer is the third leading cause of death worldwide. And most patients die without having been diagnosed.
Therefore he said that among the main risk factors for liver cancer are liver cirrhosis, infection with hepatitis B and C viruses, obesity and fatty liver, which can lead to the development of these lesions.
He stressed that the biannual surveillance of these cases through ultrasound and the use of genetic markers are fundamental factors in the early detection of the disease and action to stop the progression of the tumor.
Dr. Pedro Pablo González Rojas, president of the Cuban Society of Imaging. Emphasized that working with a multidisciplinary team is essential in the stage of diagnosis and evolution. Applying alternatives and practices with greater clarity in the results.
Moreover he pointed out that preventive follow-up using ultrasound and ultrasound requires exclusion and inclusion criteria for better accuracy in monitoring.
Orientimagen 2025 will be in session until February 28 in Holguin. It brings together oncologists, imaging specialists, radiologists and hepatologists from Pinar del Río, Havana, Mayabeque, Villa Clara, Ciego de Ávila, Camagüey, Las Tunas and the host province.
