Holguin: Assisted Reproduction at international standards

The Assisted Reproduction Territorial Center of Holguin handles international standards in the success of low complexity techniques, with a punctual attention to the procreation disorders and the help to the conformation of the Cuban family.

With 81 births so far this year, as a result of the procedures carried out in 2023, the clinic, attached to the Vladimir Ilyich Lenin Hospital, has a 12 percent effectiveness rate in artificial insemination treatment, only two points below the global criterion, Dr. Madelin Gonzalez Leyva, director of the clinic, explains.

This process is part of the second level of attention of the national program, which is carried out through a follow-up protocol for the cases from their reception by the family physician, their transit to the municipal clinics and, depending on the cause of infertility, their referral to the provincial center, she said.

For this purpose, the results of a group of complementary analyses are taken into account, to the need for reproduction; the age of the parental figures, which does not age of parental figures not exceeding 45 and 55 years of age in women and men, respectively, and the ineffectiveness of other procedures that help to determine whether it is necessary to send the file to the high-tech tertiary level, she said.

Due to its complexity, artificial insemination is performed in six rounds to achieve the desired pregnancy, not only for couples six rounds aimed at achieving the desired pregnancy, not only for heterosexual couples with a stable bond, but also in homoaffective and single-parent couples, for which a multidisciplinary team is formed to ensure the proper health of parents and children, she said.

The doctor commented that each case is evaluated according to its unique characteristics and is accompanied from the nutrition of the spermatozoon in the laboratory to improve its quality, stimulation of the female partner, fertilization and possible gestation, all of which entails dedication and care on the part of the medical staff.

Since March to date, 118 of these treatments have been performed, of which only 13 have resulted in pregnancy, corresponding to families with uterine disorders, male factor, endocrine and metabolic problems in women, among others, she added.

The current Program of Assisted Reproduction in Human Beings, founded in 2007 as a Program of Attention to the Infertile Couple, is implemented in Cuba through consultation services in each municipality, provincial hospital units and four high-tech territorial clinics, one of which is located in Holguín, which guarantees assistance to the eastern region of the country.
