On the occasion of the Latin American Dentistry Day, on October 3, the Provincial Scientific Conference of the specialty, ODONTOS 2024, was held in Holguin, with the participation of professionals from several countries in both on-site and virtual modalities.
According to the President of the Holguin Chapter of the Cuban Society of Stomatology, Dr. Reynier Cedeño Ramírez, it was a totally new experience, a successful challenge.
“We had the participation of colleagues from other countries such as Spain, Argentina and Mexico. We also conducted virtual courses, making use of technology and communication where professors shared their knowledge,” he added.
Organized by the Stomatology Department of the Faculty of Medical Sciences and the Stomatology Sciences Chapter of the Provincial Council of Scientific Health Societies, the ODONTOS 2024 conference was attended by about a hundred professionals divided into both modalities and showed how much science can contribute to the development of the specialty.
He also highlighted the involvement of professionals related to dentistry, including stomatologists, technicians, graduates and undergraduate students because “it is a privilege to have had these lectures by professionals from other countries who have showed their procedures and working techniques, which have made this meeting very fruitful”, concluded the also specialist of I and II degree in General Comprehensive Stomatology and Periodontics.
During October 2 and 3, stomatological care at the primary and secondary levels was addressed through virtual courses, lectures and scientific sessions.
About 12 professionals who are part of the history of the specialty and are an example to follow for the new generations were recognized, and the Master of Stomatology Distinction was awarded for their life’s work dedicated to teaching and assistance.
The participation of the Mexican specialist in Periodontics and implants César Israel Alemán Rivera also stood out, who said he came “to share a little bit of knowledge on biomaterials and some topics on dental surgery, which allows us to have a different perspective of the possibilities to solve problems with the minimum possible materials associated with what we have at hand. It is always interesting to know how they work in other countries, how they perform and solve problems, and we take that with us as well”.
Other topics analyzed at ODONTOS 2024 were the training of human resources in Stomatology; the history of the specialty; information and communication technologies; management, economic evaluation and quality in health systems and services.
Thus, this scientific space contributed both to the research development and to the socialization of knowledge, despite the deficit of resources present in the stomatological services of the province, the daily work of stomatologists, technicians and students for the sake of the oral health of the population should be recognized.
