Holguin boosts social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities

The Board of Directors of the Cuban Association of People with Intellectual Disabilities (Acpidi) in the province of Holguin will affiliate new members as of next August, as part of the attention to this vulnerable population group.

This first stage, thta will be gradually developing, consists of the accreditation of medical conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, one of the most prevalent in the eastern territory.

Sandra Gurris Hidalgo, an official of the Provincial Directorate of Public Health, told ACN that this activity will include patients from the health areas of Holguin city, in a staggered manner, starting with the Julio Grave de Peralta polyclinic and aims to facilitate self-validism and social insertion.

The process will count on the participation of a multidisciplinary team of specialists, integrated by a psychologist, a defectologist, a physiatrist, a physician and a social worker, who will facilitate the individual evaluation, she pointed out.

In turn, Liudmila Batista García, president of the organization, emphasized that due to the characteristics of this population group, the legal representatives of each patient, who are responsible for the management, medical and psychosocial care, will also be integrated.

She pointed out that one of Acpidi’s purposes is to promote inclusive development and accompany State and Government bodies in these functions, hence the importance of integrating as many people as possible.

She stressed that the promotion of the defense of rights and opportunities will also be materialized, as well as promoting access to new technologies and scientific research focused on these purposes.

Cuba has more than 150 thousand citizens with intellectual disabilities, of which more than 18 thousand are from the province of Holguin, which makes it the second in the Caribbean island with the highest incidence in this indicator.
