Last night was a beautiful and well-deserved evening. An encounter with Holguin, its history, culture and identity. An appointment to celebrate love, from art, our traditions, 304 years after the foundation of the town of San Isidoro de Holguin.
The gala in the main square, Calixto Garcia Park, directed by Oreste Saavedra, was hosted by the centenary Provincial Concert Band. Under the baton of maestro Daniel Sosa, the musicians accompanied soloists Lucrecia Marín, Marien Hernández, Daniel Arseri and Nadiel Mejías in pieces by Holguín composers such as Alfredo “Chiquitín” Morales, Juanito Márquez and Manuel de Jesús Leyva.
The cast of the show “Holguín, la ciudad que queremos” was completed by the vocal quartet Feeling Voices, the Oral Narration Company Palabras Al Viento, Los Guayabero group, the Poiesis project of dancer and choreographer Vianki González, the Teatro Lírico Rodrigo Prats and the Compañía Folclórica La Campana.

A song to the Holguín we love
Near midnight, those present sang together with the Orfeón Choir the notes of the Anthem of Holguín, whose lyrics were written by the colonel of the Liberator Army Pedro Martínez Freyre and whose music is attributed to the notable composer and musician José María Ochoa.
To close, the emblematic Original de Manzanillo Orchestra, whose leader is the National Music Award winner Wilfredo “Pachy” Naranjo, offered a concert as a gift to the city and its people.

On a date close to April 4, 1545, the captain from Extremadura Francisco García Holguín moved his former encomienda from El Yayal to Cayo Llano, as the region where the city is currently located was known at the time, and founded his ranch here, a portion of land dedicated to raising large livestock.
