Ediciones La Luz calls for the Celestino Short Story Award

Ediciones La Luz and the Literature Section of the Hermanos Saíz Association in Holguín have called for the XXV Celestino Short Story Prize, to be held from June 10 to 15 this year.

The contest, one of the most coveted by young Cuban writers under 35 years of age, will be open for entries with an unpublished notebook, between 45 and 70 pages in length.

The organizing committee specifies that the originals will be received until May 20 only through the e-mail address 25premiocelestinodecuento@gmail.com, to which two separate files must be sent, one belonging to the book in competition and the other to the envelope, duly identified.

The jury’s decision will be announced on June 14, and the winner will be awarded a diploma, ten thousand pesos in national currency and the publication of the book (printed and e-book) with the seal of Ediciones La Luz and the respective payment of the copyright.

At the same time, La Luz announced the poster contest “My name is Celestino”, in which participants can take part with an illustration or design based on a character or passage from the novel “Celestino antes del alba” (Celestino before dawn), by the well-known Holguin-born storyteller Reynaldo Arenas.

The Celestino Short Story Award was won in its first edition, in 1999, by writer Rubén Rodríguez with the short story “Flora and the Angel”, to which homage is paid in 2024, together with the 40th anniversary of the death of storyteller, poet and translator Julio Cortázar and the 110th anniversary of the birth of Onelio Jorge Cardoso, “El cuentero mayor” (The Greatest Storyteller).
