At Fayad Jamís bookstore, in Havana, will be presented the book “Las ataxias en Cuba. Biografía de un proyecto” (Ataxias in Cuba. Biography of a Project), by Dr. Luis Velázquez Pérez, on the occasion of Cuba’s Science Day next Monday.
In eight chapters, the author reflects on the experience by the Center for Research and Rehabilitation of Hereditary Ataxias (CIRAH), an institution he founded and directed for nearly two decades.

The book proposes, among other topics, the studies on hereditary ataxias in Cuba and its historic background in the world, as well as the experiences lived with patients and relatives, and the advice given to both for the diagnosis and control of the disease.

Velázquez Pérez is a Doctor in Medicine originally from Holguin province, who before becoming the president of Cuba’s Academy of Sciences, abandoned himself to studying the ataxias in Holguin, the province with the highest prevalence of the disease in the country.
Luis Velázquez Pérez is a Doctor in Sciences, a Professor of the University of Medical Sciences in Holguin and the Academy of Sciences of Cuba, and was the Director of the Center for Research and Rehabilitation of Hereditary Ataxias, in northeastern Cuban Holguin of Holguin.
