Holguin boxers Munive and Soto crowned in Kazakh tourney

Holguin boxers Jairo Munive (67 kg) and Jorge Manuel Soto (80 kg) grabbed the crown this Thursday in a boxing tournament held in the city of Karaganda, Kazakhstan.

In the event Cuba reached gold medals thanks to 63.5 kg world runner-up Erislandy Álvarez, who reedited his title a year ago, and Giorgis Salfrán of the 51 kgs.

The Cuban wins came vs local boxers: Munive over Ryskhan Talip; Soto vs. Bakbergen Aliaskarov; Salfrán vs. against Rosky Talip; and Alvarez off Mukammedali Sydyk.

With this victories, the Cuban squad surpassed last year’s performance when Erislán Romero (51 kg), Saidel Horta (57 kg) and Erislandy Alvarez (63.5) got the wins.

Cuba also attended the Kazakh tourney with boxers Rafael Joubert (60 kg), Nelson Williams (86 kg) and Freddy Pérez (92 kg) who were defeated in the semifinals, while Adonis Bell (+92 kg) in the previous phase.

Cuban boxers’ farewell to the current season will take place this Sunday, when five of their stars, led by two-time Olympic champions Julio Cesar La Cruz and Arlen Lopez, will take part in a duel against Russia.

The match is scheduled for the city of Samara and will also involve the runner-up Saidel Horta, the bronze medalist at that level Alejandro Claro and the also promising Jorge Cuellar.
