Holguín Sultanes retained provincial baseball crown

The Sultanes of Holguín left the Cafetaleros of Sagua de Tánamo on the field, 4×3 at Feliú Leyva stadium, in the eighth inning and with their third win without setbacks in the final revalidated their crown in the XLVI Provincial Baseball Series.

Sagua de Tanamo sqaud, who had scored two runs in the first inning and another in the fifth against starter César Concepción, were two outs away from victory, but in the seventh, the Sultanes of Holguín negotiated a tie against left-handed reliever Leonardo Romero.

Romero struck out the two batters he faced to spoil an excellent start by left-hander Pablo Cabrejas, who tolerated one learn run in 6 1/3 innings, in which he had barely allowed four singles and had struck out four batters, although he walked six men.

The victory went to Yasmani Rubio, who pitched the eighth inning without allowing a run, one hit and a walk.

The setback went to Róger Eliot, who in the seventh inning managed two outs and allowed one run, but opened the eighth inning with a deaball, to be replaced by Luis Raúl López who, after getting uts, walked three hitters, the third one to Edilse Silva who drove in the winning run.

Laindel Leiva, the champions’ (2-3) shortstop, was the only one with more than one hit in a game with no extra-bases and no errors, with five hits for the winners and six for the losers.

For Holguín Sultanes, this was their tenth championships, which put them one behind the Tigres de Báguanos (eleven crowns), followed by the Vaqueros of Calixto García, with eight wins.

In the final standing, after Holguín Sultanes and Cafetaleros, went the Piratas of Gibara, Alegres of Mayarí, Tigres of Báguanos, Vaqueros of Calixto García, Mineros of Moa and Colosos of Urbano Noris, in this order.

From the ninth to fifteenth place went the squads of Navegantes of Rafael Freyre, Delfines of Antilla, Ferroviarios of Cueto, Mambises of Cacocum, Indios of Banes, Leones of Frank País, and the invited team of Juveniles (under 18).

With their title, Holguín Sultanes won the right to represent the province in the national tournament of champion baseball clubs between January 19 and February 12, 2024.

In the opening of the event, by the single elimination system and with a three-game series, the team from Holguín will face, as home club on Saturday January 20 and Sunday January 21, the Azucareros of Campechuela, a team that this Wednesday won its third straight title and a lifetime team in baseball in the province of Granma.
