The “Lote 2026” exhibition, a visual arts showcase within the 24th Iberoarte International Handicraft Fair. Opens its doors today at the Bayado Gallery, operated by the Cuban Fund for Cultural Assets (FCBC) in Holguin. The exhibition is dedicated to the centenary of Fidel Castro Ruz.
Danilo López Garcés, the event organizer and a specialist at the Holguin branch of the FCBC, told the CNA that this edition features more than 20 creators presenting around 25 works. These pieces encompass a wide range of visual arts, including handicrafts.
The figure of Fidel Castro is explored through various techniques and materials. Most notably stone alongside imagery such as the horse (linked to the leader’s origins) and the crocodile (alluding to popular religions of African origin).
López Garcés noted that the exhibition includes photography, design, sculpture, and paintings in acrylic and oil. A notable feature of this year’s edition is the inclusion of new members from the Cuban Association of Artisan Artists.
He added that the exhibition continues to offer an “acquisition prize”. A distinction that sets “Lote” apart from other local cultural institutions. As it recognizes the value of an artist’s work by incorporating it into the organization’s permanent institutional collection.
Among the participating creators, López Garcés highlighted the contributions of Luis Alfonso Tamayo Demetri, with his portrait. Alfredo Jiménez Leiva, a local artist known for evocative works. Salvador Pavón Gómez, a renowned figure in naïve art. And a landscape of Cerro Cariblanco by Carlos Rafael Díaz Borges. A piece that, according to the organizer, invites a return to one’s roots, to the land, and to the legacy of Fidel Castro.
The opening of the exhibition, held on National Culture Day, celebrates the connection between the visual arts in Holguin and the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution. Exploring this relationship through a series of works that touch upon themes such as childhood and family.
