Promoting Gender Equity in Rural Areas of Holguin

The “Equity Tree” is one of the initiatives develop by the World Food Programme’s (WFP) “Nutrivida” project in the province. Aimed at promoting equality between men and women in rural areas.

The event took place this Friday at the Eugenio González Montada Credit and Services Cooperative—located in the San Rafael local administrative unit, within the provincial capital. As part of the observances for the International Day of Rural Women and World Food Day.

Yudania Cuza Silot, a professor at the University of Holguin and a specialist in this field, explained to the Cuban News Agency that a deep-rooted patriarchal tradition exists in the Cuban countryside. Therefore, efforts are made to foster equal opportunities for both men and women.

She highlighted that the “Equity Tree”—an initiative in which participants press their hands, coated in colorful watercolors, onto a mural. It serves to affirm a commitment to shifting mindsets from an early age. It also encourages inclusive approaches that benefit local agricultural production.

As part of the project’s gender component, other actions are carry out to promote equity in rural settings. Including the use of questionnaires and interviews in key areas, she explained.

Another fundamental pillar is the training of leaders, producers, and community activists on gender-related issues. A vital step toward the empowerment of women across various social spheres, the expert noted.

Nutrivida is an international cooperation project being implemented in the provinces of Mayabeque and Holguin from 2025 to 2029. It is led by the Ministry of Public Health, with the participation of local institutions and authorities. Support from the World Food Programme (WFP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and funding from the Government of Canada.

Its objective is to improve food security and the nutritional status of children up to 12 years of age, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women.
