With the addition of outfielder and infielder Andrys Agüero to Cuba’s preliminary squad for the U-23 Baseball World Cup. The total number of players from Holguin province called up across four age categories has reached seven.
Agüero will aim to secure a spot during the training camp starting September 14th in Cienfuegos. Which will be overseen by Lugdis Pineda, a member of the coaching staff for the “Cubs” (Holguin’s National Series team).
For the U-15 World Cup, taking place starting the 25th in Merida, Mexico. Pitcher Alexandro Martínez Segura remains in the group of 27 athletes training in Pinar del Rio.
Others with a chance to wear the national team uniform include Dervis David Almaguer Legra (catcher), Gabriel Hernández Pérez (first baseman and pitcher), and Anthony Omar Cruz Ayala (outfielder and pitcher) from the U-12 category. Also they will begin training in Sancti Spiritus on September 13th in preparation for the continental event for their age group.
U-18 players are training in Santiago de Cuba ahead of the Pan-American tournament. Among those still vying for a spot are Holguin natives Adriano López (catcher) and Luis Daniel Rodríguez (pitcher). Experienced physician Ramiro Pichardo will be part of this squad.
Holguin baseball is currently enjoying a strong run, thanks to the presence of athletes in preliminary and national teams. A recent example is Yasiel González, a native of Gibara. Also who competed for Cuba at the Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games.
