Holguin native Aroldis Chapman reaches record in U.S. baseball

Holguin native Aroldis Chapman, closer for the Boston Red Sox, reached the historic milestone of 400 saves in Major League Baseball (MLB). According to several media outlets in Boston, USA, on Monday.

Chapman achieved the mark in his team’s 3-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. A game in which he also reached 33 saves in the current MLB season.

The veteran closer began his outing in the ninth inning, inducing a fly ball to left field from Blaze Alexander. He then allowed a single to Pete Alonso and finished his performance by striking out Coby Mayo and Christian Encarnación.
With the two strikeouts, the Boston closer raised his season total to 65. Furthermore, he lowered his ERA to 2.03, factors that place him among the most reliable pitchers in the major leagues.

Also with more than 16 seasons in the majors, the native of the eastern province of Holguin reached 400 career saves. A feat only eight pitchers had accomplished before.

The Cuban’s name joins a list headed by Panamanian Mariano Rivera with 652 saves. Followed by Trevor Hoffman (601), while Kenley Jansen rounds out the top three with 493 saves.
