The 60th Anniversary of the October Revolution Sugarcane Harvester Factory (KTP) is contributing to the construction of homes. Using shipping containers to reduce the housing shortage in Holguin province.
Dania Betancourt Peña, KTP’s business director, explained to the Cuban News Agency that the homes have zinc roofs. There are lined with high-temperature insulating materials. The finishing touches include anti-corrosive paint, tiled kitchens, and other features that improve habitability.
Furthermore these housing units are intended for people whose homes have been damage or who are in vulnerable situations in the province. This strategy was implement with the delivery of units in the Piedra Blanca neighborhood of the provincial capital.
María de los Ángeles Mora Alméciga, a specialist at the company, noted that the factory is undertaking the project as part of its technological reconversion. Since the industry was originally design to manufacture sugarcane harvesters for sugar production.
Moreover the factory is installing anchors for the concrete foundations of the modules in a community planned for dozens of these units. Conceived as more sustainable urban models and as an alternative to the scarcity of materials and the high costs of traditional construction.
KTP, belonging to the metalworking sector, is transitioning to a new production profile. Also strengthening its ties and links with other entities in the Holguin economy.
