With the firm purpose of consolidating international cooperation and academic exchange. A fruitful working meeting was held at the University of Holguin (UHo) with Dr. Jessica Vorstermans. A distinguished associate professor and director of the Undergraduate Program at the School of Health Policy and Management of York University, Canada.
The prestigious Canadian academic was received by representatives of the International Relations Office. Members of the Chair of Canadian Studies, and directors of the Faculty of Social Sciences of our university. In a setting that fostered constructive dialogue and the planning of new common goals.
During her visit, Dr. Vorstermans—recognized for her research in global health, North-South relations, and equity. Participated in a scientific exchange where she presented the remarkable results of bilateral collaboration.
The professor highlighted the impact of the academic meetings, both in-person and virtual. Developed jointly by health sciences students from York University, various faculties of the University of Holguin (UHo), and healthcare professionals from the Holguin region.
Also this enriching experience is part of experiential learning initiatives coordinated by Vorstermans. Such as the advanced studies program “Experience Cuba: Enacting the Human Right to Health & Health Equity.” Through this project, Canadian students analyze firsthand the Cuban social and healthcare model and its high standards of community care.
“Academic solidarity and mutual learning are not only possible, but necessary to transform our perspectives on global health,” Vorstermans stated.
The working meeting also served to outline future faculty and student exchange programs. Reinforcing UHo’s role as a bridge of knowledge and friendship between Cuba and Canada.
Furthermore the University of Holguin (UHo) thus reaffirms its commitment to the internationalization of higher education. Promoting spaces that not only enhance academic rigor but also contribute directly to social development and the well-being of our communities.
Vorstermans is an Associate Professor and Director of the Undergraduate Program at the School of Health Policy and Management, Faculty of Health, York University (Toronto, Canada).
Her main research interests include North-South relations, transnational service learning. Community health equity, human rights, and critical disability studies.
She is also the lead coordinator of academic programs that bring Canadian students to our province. To learn about the equity approach of the Cuban health system. In close collaboration with UHo and the University of Medical Sciences of Holguin.
