The province of Holguin is strengthening forest protection. As part of its strategies to mitigate deforestation, one of the region’s environmental problems.
Geovanny Zaldívar Martínez, a specialist in this area, told the Cuban News Agency that the province managed to incorporate more than 9,000 hectares into sustainable land management programs in 2025. Based on national and international projects.
The fundamental objective, he emphasized, is to reverse and halt environmental degradation. Through reforestation, improvement, and community education efforts.
Zaldívar Martínez noted that priority is being given to watersheds, the ecosystems of the Turquino Plan. And protected areas, where forests are essential for maintaining species balance.
In conjunction with the forestry program, other initiatives are being implemented. Such as soil demonstration plots and watershed rehabilitation. These programs promote the use of natural fertilizers and provide economic incentives to farmers for employing sustainable farming techniques.
The province has seen results in the recovery of mining areas through the reintroduction of native flora varieties. Including Pinus cubensis, whose young specimens are monitored periodically.
Moreover the region has a total of 373,000 hectares of forest, including plantations and natural areas. Environmental regulatory agencies, the flora and fauna department. And the Center for Environmental Research and Services are also involved in their protection.
