Rain caused the game between Las Tunas and Holguin to be sealed this Thursday in the 64th National Baseball Series. When the latter were leading 1-0 in the top of the fifth inning, and the Industriales-Sancti Spiritus duel couldn’t even begin.
At Calixto García Stadium, the Cubs were one out away from victory. As Las Tunas was batting in the top of the fifth with two outs and a runner on first base. First-base umpire Luis Figueredo stopped the game. The Holguin players requested to continue, as it was barely raining.
Had the third out in that inning fallen, without a run scored, the game would have been called and the hosts would have won. This Thursday, the Matanzas Crocodiles knocked out the Artemisa Hunters 11-1. Moving them two and a half games away from the top of the series.
The Santiago de Cuba Wasps, also at their home stadium, defeated the Camagüey Bulls 7-2. While the Mayabeque Hurricanes took advantage of that result to break the barrier separating the top spot and tie the Toros. Defeating the bottom-placed Isla de la Juventud Pirates 6-2 at Nelson Fernández Stadium.
Meanwhile, the Cienfuegos Elephants, at their 5 de Septiembre Stadium, defeated the Pinar del Rio Vegueros 9-1 and continued their battle for a postseason berth. At the Augusto César Sandino Stadium in Villa Clara, the Granma Alazanes and the Granma Leopards split the doubleheader, according to CNA.
Granma won 5-3 early on, and Villa Clara won 1-0 at the close. Thanks to an excellent pitching performance by Alain Sánchez. Yoel Mojena was a worthy opponent, but allowed a game-clinching home run by Osman Caruncho.
Finally, the Guantanamo Indians, at their Nguyen Van Troi Stadium, defeated the Ciego de Avila Tigers 6-4, despite two home runs by Asniel Jiménez.
The current leaders in the standings are: Matanzas (21-7); Santiago de Cuba and Artemisa (17-8 at 2.5). Industriales and Las Tunas (15-9 at 4.0); Holguin (16-10 at 4.0); Sancti Spiritus (16-11 at 4.5), Mayabeque, and Camagüey (14-13 at 6.5).
This Friday, Industriales and Sancti Spiritus are expected to play their match. While Holguin and Las Tunas will continue theirs. But will no longer be able to count on starters Carlos Santiesteban and Rubén Rodríguez.
