Telecommunications companies Huawei and China Unicom recently launched a 10 gigabits per second (10G) broadband service using 50G-PON passive optical network technology, according to local media.
Called Digital China, the initiative aims to install 10G optical networks in approximately 100 Chinese regions by 2025. The home network achieves download speeds of 9,834 Mbps and upload speeds of 1,008 Mbps, with a stable latency of just three milliseconds, allowing users to download movies in just the blink of an eye.
In addition to allowing users to enjoy 8K resolution videos, large-scale online games, and 3D games with the naked eye in home settings, the initiative is expected to lay the groundwork for use in virtual and augmented reality, as well as in the creation of smart cities and autonomous cars, and even in remote surgery.
Beijing, the capital of China, was the first region to benefit from this advancement through a pilot test. This was followed by the Xiong’an urban district in Hebei province, as well as the cities of Jiaozuo and Mengzhou, and several areas in Rizhao city.
The network was also deployed in the Luotian County Smart Agricultural Park, “marking the presence of the 10G optical network in the commercial sector and becoming a benchmark for innovative practices.
” In the agricultural sector, specifically, the network can support product quality inspection and the real-time transmission of intelligent production control instructions, helping companies achieve the digital transformation of production processes.
