This October 4 concluded at the University of Medical Sciences of Holguin (UCMHo) the accreditation process of the master’s degree in Mental and Community Health, after a week of deep analysis and evaluation of various variables required by the four experts members of the National Accreditation Board (JAC).
According to Dr. Mayra Góngora, President of the Holguín Chapter of Psychiatry and coordinator of this postgraduate program at the university, during these days they were in scenarios related to the specialty, such as at Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja pediatric hospital, where they witnessed an important project carried out with children with autism spectrum disorder, one of the most significant projects in the field of child psychiatry.
The tour of the JAN members through the different sites where the master’s degree students in Mental and Community Health are trained in the province of Holguin included a visit to the Community Mental Health Center, where they had the opportunity of contacting a group of patients from the community of neurotics, with professionals of the center and with the rest of the work team.
During this day the conclusions of the important evaluation process will be submitted to the national level, awaiting for the subsequent evaluation category granted.
The Master’s degree in Mental and Community Health, which began on January 15, 2018, – a two year course-, currently has two editions completed and one in is in progress. During the first edition, 26 professionals were trained, and in the second edition, which opened on February 10, 2020, 43 master’s degree were given, while in the current edition, that started on October 11, 2022, 26 master’s students are enrolled.
Thus, a total of 69 masters have graduated, in accordance with international standards and norms for this type of training program, said the specialist, who is also a second-degree specialist in Psychiatry, and assistant professor at UCMHo.
The faculty that teaches the different modules is made up of 19 professors from different specialties, who develop the different modules, and 18 courses, which contain the elementary knowledge that must be acquired by the Master’s degree in Mental and Community Health.
For the selection of the master’s students in each edition, an interview is conducted and the interests of the professionals and the work center to which he/she belong to. To date, there have been trained experts in various specialties, not only Adult Psychiatry, but also Children Psychiatry, Psychology, specialists in General Comprehensive Medicine and professionals in the field of education.
Accreditation is part of the substantive processes of higher education in Cuba and worldwide. Thus Universities that are accredited have the advantage of being recognized internationally.
Therefore, accredited programs PhD and master’s degree and accredited specialties have an official recognition by means of demanding parameters, established by official recognition through demanding parameters established by the Ministry of Higher Education.
By meeting the required parameters, the need for training, research and actions in the sense of training, research and actions in the sense of performance.
