The second course for the formation of health promoters planned for the summer period by the Department of Education and Health Promotion of the Provincial Center of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology takes place in Holguin. This is a way to bring young people closer to the main health problems that affect their adequate development.
According to Dr. Rosario Hernández Díaz, member of that department, “in the first edition, leaders of the Federation of High School Students (FEEM) of the province, of some institutions of the head municipality and adolescents in general participated and in the second edition, which takes place from July 15 to 19, students of the FEEM of the Nursing Branch of Comandante Aridez Estévez Sánchez will participate. Among the contents to be dealt with are teenage pregnancy, drug consumption and sexually transmitted infections”.
For example, they are taught how to perform genital self-examination and self-care. They are also instructed on how to negotiate the use of condoms with their partners and the need to use them to prevent different sexually transmitted diseases.
Audiovisual educational materials were produced on how to perform a menstrual regulation, an abortion, the risks of infertility, hysterectomy, if there is bleeding or if the normal methods fail, so that they are aware of the risks to which an adolescent is subjected when she does not plan a pregnancy correctly.
Also, “a specialist in gynecobstetrics shows them the instruments used, the technique, how a curettage is performed, and it is very useful because most of them are unaware of this subject. This way they are prepared for life.
They exchange with life stories that some of them have had at their young age about what happened to acquaintances related to the consumption of some substances at the community level.
About how they have been able to overcome these difficulties and how they face these challenges on a daily basis. We want them to be facilitators with their peers in all the educational centers of the province”, concluded the specialist in General Comprehensive Medicine.
As part of the program, the students receive theoretical and practical training that enables them to acquire the indispensable knowledge and develop the necessary skills for the promotion of health. This is also an important social impact activity with community and school interventions that will be carried out from September onwards.
The action seeks to transform environments, change mentalities and position itself at the forefront of health care in the communities of this northeastern territory.
Health promoters currently have many actions to do to influence lifestyles, modify social conditions and achieve a positive impact on individual and collective health.
