Holguin Copextel in favor of clean energy

Copextel’s subsidiary in Holguín contributes to the use of renewable energy resources through the FORMER Project, a program that benefits medical and educational centers in the municipalities of Moa and the provincial capital city with the installation of solar water heaters.

George Aguilera Proenza, head of the entity’s Project Group, informed ACN that the program “Strengthening the Leadership and Participation of Women in the Renewable Energy Sector in Cuba” (FORMER) is a collaboration between the governments of Cuba and Canada, which in the territory seeks to take advantage of the heat from sunlight to benefit priority institutions.

Among them are two clinics, two polyclinics, five children’s day care centers, a home for the elderly and a maternity home, where 80 heaters will be installed to benefit more than 200,000 patients and users, he said.

Aguilera Proenza explained that the process is progressing in several places, such as the Juan Manuel Páez Polyclinic in Moa, in addition to preparing the installation of equipment at Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja Pediatric Hospital  in the capital city of this northeastern territory.

The plan includes the provision of a photovoltaic system for injection to the grid and water pumps for Guillermo Luis General Hospital, in Moa, a technology that will guarantee the presence of the liquid throughout the day in a health care center for which it is essential, he said.

He also added that the program will also promote the change of the energy matrix through the supply of small autonomous photovoltaic systems to homes in areas of difficult access to the power grid in the 14 municipalities of Holguín province.

The implementation of the FORMER project, financed by Global Affairs Canada and Sherritt International Corporation, also involves the participation of organizations such as the Unión Eléctrica and the scientific organization Cubasolar, and among its objectives is the empowerment of women in the energy sector.
